Who Are the Counselors Behind Texas Community Counseling?

Updated: May 1

At Texas Community Counseling, we believe that healing happens in the context of connection. That connection begins with the people we invite into the counseling room—and we’re proud to introduce you to the heart of our team.

Tonya King-Smith, LCSW-S

If you’ve met Tonya, you know she brings a grounded presence and decades of dedication to the healing work she does. A Licensed Clinical Social Worker-Supervisor with a long list of credentials—including training in EMDR, TBRI®, Natural Lifemanship, and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Interventions—Tonya takes a holistic, client-centered approach to therapy.

Tonya has been in social work since 2003 and is deeply experienced in walking alongside those experiencing trauma, anxiety, depression, family violence, parenting challenges, and major life transitions. Her sessions are shaped by compassion, curiosity, and a belief in the power of environment, empowerment, and connection. She's also one of our equine therapy providers, partnering with horses to bring healing in motion.

Tonya lives what she teaches—her "hobbies" include being a full-time mama to four kids, stewarding a small menagerie of animals, and showing up for her clients with authenticity and grit.

Trish Remington, M.A., LPC

With over 25 years of experience, Trish brings a depth of wisdom and steadiness to her counseling practice. Her training spans across modalities like EMDR and Brainspotting (BSP), and she uses a blended, holistic approach that adapts to each person’s unique needs.

Trish specializes in helping survivors of abuse (emotional, physical, sexual, or neglect), as well as those navigating depression, anxiety, and trauma. Her counseling style is compassionate and authentic—she’s gentle, but not afraid to be honest. She believes in the transformational power of processing pain and making space for hope.

Outside the office, Trish is a beach lover and a creative spirit—her art supplies and seashell collection are never far from reach.

Stephen Gehring, MABC, LPCA* supervised by Lauren D. Smith

Stephen is the newest member of our counseling team, and he brings with him a unique blend of clinical training and pastoral care. With a background in communication and a Master’s in Biblical Counseling from Dallas Theological Seminary, he weaves Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with Biblical truths and neurobiology to support individuals, couples, and families.

Stephen has 6 years of counseling experience and 14 years in pastoral ministry, and his passion is helping people see themselves more clearly—replacing automatic negative thoughts with truth and hope. Whether you’re working through anxiety, depression, grief, parenting, or marriage challenges, Stephen meets you with empathy, humor, and deep care.

Clients can expect a warm, safe, and faith-informed space when they work with Stephen. He also loves music, golf, board games, and walks with his wife and two kids.
