What Is Brainspotting Therapy—and Can It Help You Heal?

When life feels heavy in ways you can’t quite explain, when your body holds onto stress, memories, or emotions long after your mind wants to move on, it can leave you feeling stuck.

You may have tried to “talk it out.”

You may understand why you feel the way you do.

And yet… something still lingers.

This is where Brainspotting offers a different path. If you’ve ever wondered what Brainspotting is and how it works, you’re in the right place.

Understanding Brainspotting

Brainspotting is a powerful, focused therapy that helps identify, process, and release trauma and emotional pain stored in the body. It’s based on a simple but profound idea: where you look affects how you feel.

During a Brainspotting session, a trained therapist helps you find specific eye positions called “brainspots” that are connected to unresolved experiences in the brain and nervous system. By holding your gaze on these points, your brain is able to access and begin processing what’s been stored, in a safe and supported way.

Brainspotting was developed in 2003 by Dr. David Grand and has since become a widely used approach for trauma and emotional healing. It grew out of EMDR therapy but takes a more focused approach by working with specific points in your visual field that connect to deeper, nonverbal parts of the brain where many experiences are held beyond words.

Because of this, Brainspotting can reach areas that traditional talk therapy may not fully access, especially when experiences are stored more in the body than in conscious thought.

Why Brainspotting Feels Different

Unlike traditional talk therapy, Brainspotting doesn’t rely on explaining everything.

Instead, it allows your brain and body to do what they were designed to do:

process, release, and heal.

Many people find that Brainspotting reaches places that feel “stuck,” especially when:

  • You know something is wrong, but can’t explain why

  • Talking about it feels overwhelming—or not enough

  • You experience physical reactions like anxiety, tension, or shutdown

Rather than pushing for answers, this approach creates space for your brain to process at its own pace.

The Benefits of Brainspotting Therapy

Brainspotting is gentle, but deeply effective—and increasingly recognized as a powerful tool in trauma-informed care.

Some of the most common benefits include:

  • Relief from trauma and emotional distress: Helps process unresolved experiences without needing to relive them in detail.

  • Reduced anxiety and overwhelm: Supports your nervous system in finding regulation and calm.

  • Deeper mind-body connection: Helps you understand not just your thoughts—but your physical responses and triggers.

  • Support for a wide range of challenges: Including trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, abuse recovery, and chronic stress.

  • Healing that feels natural—not forced: Your brain leads the process, at its own pace.

Because Brainspotting works with the brain and body together, many people experience shifts not just emotionally, but physically—feeling more regulated, present, and at ease
