Unlocking Communication Through Play Therapy at Texas Community Counseling

When words aren’t enough, play can speak volumes.

At Texas Community Counseling, we’re always looking for ways to meet people where they are and for children, that often means meeting them on their level: the floor, the toy bin, the storybook, or the sandbox. Thanks to the generous support of Freedom Life Church, we’re proud to introduce our brand-new Play Therapy Room. This space was created with care, designed specifically to help children feel safe, seen, and supported as they begin their journey toward healing.

What Is Play Therapy?

Children don’t always have the words to explain what they’re feeling. When big emotions or traumatic events overwhelm them, play becomes a powerful outlet and a way to express, process, and begin to heal. Play therapy has been proven effective for children experiencing anxiety, grief, trauma, behavioral challenges, divorce, and other emotional struggles.

Studies show that most children begin to improve after just 8 to 12 sessions, and more than 80% show meaningful positive change.

In play therapy, kids work one-on-one with a licensed counselor trained to use toys, art, storytelling, and games as tools for emotional expression. Whether a child is dealing with grief, anxiety, behavioral issues, or trauma, play therapy provides a gentle, effective path forward. This room is more than a renovation it’s a where our skilled counselors turn “play” into powerful, purposeful healing.

What Makes Our Room Special?

Our playroom isn’t just a colorful space it’s a carefully thought-out environment with therapeutic goals in mind. Each toy, corner, and element of the room serves a purpose:

  • A dollhouse may help a child process family changes

  • Puppets offer a way to act out feelings they can’t verbalize

  • Art supplies become a safe place for children to “draw out” their inner world

  • Open floor space and flexible seating allow movement and sensory engagement, helping kids develop regulation skills and release built-up energy in a healthy way

Who Can Access This Service?

We are now accepting play therapy clients through:

  • Private Insurance: We accept a wide range of providers, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Optum, and more.

  • Self-Pay: We offer a sliding scale based on income and ability to pay, because we believe finances should never stand in the way of mental health care.

  • We are currently pending credentialing with Medicaid and CHIP.

Ready to Take the First Step?

If your child is struggling, or if you're not sure where to start, we’re here to help. No referral is needed. Just reach out, and we’ll walk alongside you from the first call to the first play session and beyond.

A Special Thanks

We are deeply grateful to Freedom Life Church for making this vision a reality. Through their Jeremiah Project, they invested in something that will benefit children and families for years to come. It’s a reminder that when community and care come together, real change happens. We look forward to seeing the benefits of play therapy come to life.
